I and Thou

At this small reading evening, we will focus on Martin Buber’s classic ‘I and Thou’, his treatise on the art of dialogue.

Buber distinguishes between two types of relationships: We can treat the other as an object – the other is clearly identified, categorised and thus usable. Or we can encounter the other in his as yet unknown fullness and enter into dialogue with him.

Dialogue is risky, but dialogue is also promising. What if we didn’t view a conversation as a contest of opinions, but as a genuine encounter in which we could actually get surprised? In which we could learn something we didn’t expect? About the other, about the world, about ourselves?

After a reading of selected passages from Buber’s book, there will be an opportunity for a short discussion in keeping with the theme of the evening.

Admission is free, but registration is requested.
