Advanced Class 27 Compact

The Advanced Class is based on the successful, proven model of the previous Human Acting Advanced Classes. Its curriculum is a further development, this time in a more compact format.

At its centre is scene study: the puzzling, trying and tinkering it takes to turn a printed sheet of paper into the living, immediate form of a scene. This time our material is the dramatic works of German-language authors up to 1930. Hand-picked texts on theatre theory and historical recordings and an excursion to the Kunsthistorisches Museum will also broaden our view and our understanding of what we are doing. The goal is independent, individual artistic work grounded in understood and realised necessities of the dramatic form – in other words, artistic autonomy.

The principle of an elastic curriculum applies: minimum requirements must be met by everyone; beyond that, excellence is encouraged, and additional challenges for the ambitious are available and can be actively requested. In the participants’ interest, the Advanced Class concludes with a certificate graded on a three-tier scale, with a top grade that is difficult to achieve, as well as the possibility of not passing.

We guarantee to work free of hollow acting clichés such as “you weren’t really in it” or “you have to want it more”. Instead, you get functional, modern knowledge, taught in dialogue: in continuous exchange between teacher and students and in constant movement from practice to reflection and back.

The Advanced Class comprises 48 teaching hours of in-person instruction. In addition, there are at least 48 hours of independent work for class preparation, assignments, and self-organised scene study alone or in small groups. The Advanced Class ends with a public performance of the scenes developed.

The Advanced Class is aimed at people who already bring prior acting knowledge and want to deepen it in a new stage – substantially, ambitiously and reflectively. It is explicitly not suitable for people looking for quick solutions and shortcuts.

It is recommended to take the course Speaking as an Art alongside the Advanced Class, as the two are closely interlinked in content.
